Military Health Hero Nominees Announced
The nominees for the second annual Military and Civilian Health Partnership Awards have been announced.
In total 24 teams, individuals and projects throughout the UK have made the shortlist across eight categories – recognising those who care for Britain’s armed forces and veterans. Among the nominees from across the UK are:
- The Birmingham-based Aeromedical Evacuation team, which operates a round-the-clock service that helps repatriate military personnel from anywhere in the world
- Wing Commander Philip Barlow from RAF Leuchars – a Glasgow neurosurgery consultant who has saved civilian and military lives in Kosovo and Afghanistan
- Lieutenant Colonel Dr Tom Trinick, a consultant physician from Northern Ireland who has recently completed three months as a medical reservist in Helmand
- The Reservist Field Hospital in Cardiff which delivers accredited patient care on operations and in the community back home in Wales.
Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:
"Throughout the UK and abroad, the men and women of our armed forces benefit from outstanding health care and these awards celebrate the partnerships that make that possible.
“All of those nominated are a credit to their professions – each nomination testament not only to their skill but their dedication and commitment.
“Whether at home, abroad, in the NHS, the forces or the voluntary or private sector, these 24 nominees provide outstanding care for the soldiers, sailors and airmen who risk their lives on our behalf.
"Each and every one of them deserves our thanks and our MCHPA ceremony in Edinburgh in October will give these heroes the credit they deserve.”
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said: "These awards show what amazing people care for our military personnel and veterans."
Outright winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at Hopetoun House in Edinburgh on October 29.
The Military and Civilian Health Partnership Awards 2009 are hosted this year by the Scottish Government – one member of a partnership comprising the Ministry of Defence, the English Department of Health, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety for Northern Ireland.
